St. John Ambulance is the oldest humanitarian organization in the world. In India we draw our inspiration from our father of the nation who served as a leader of the Indian Ambulance Corps during the Boer war in South Africa.
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru the first Prime Minister of India was joint secretary of the St. John Ambulance Association in Allahabad for 2 years. The President of India is the President of the St. John Ambulance Association (India). In the states, the Governor is the President of the state centre in all the states. Parsi Ambulance Division in Mumbai was the first St. John Ambulance unit in India and was established in 1904. St. John Ambulance, West Bengal State Centre (previously Bengal State Centre) was established in 1905. St. John Ambulance Association, India was established in the year 1912.

In West Bengal the Governor of West Bengal is the President of the St. John Ambulance Association, West Bengal, State Centre. He nominates the chairman and the Hony. Treasurer.
